Google Chat Dark Theme

Making a Change

With working remote, we often rely on the ever-accessible team chat to communicate quickly and efficiently. This also means spending long hours with Google Chat open, constantly being ready for the next direct message or group discussion to pop up. By default, Google Chat does not have a dark theme and has a very bright default theme. Seeing a great opportunity to learn how Chrome extensions worked, I began the journey of cataloging the important CSS classes of Google Chat and injecting an updated stylesheet that reflected a much preferred dark theme.

Choosing Colors

Finding a good balance between dark and too dark is certainly a daunting task. For inspiration on well implemented dark themes, the Discord brand guidelines served as an initial reference for planning the colors. Another important aspect was to keep good contrast ratios. When choosing colors, the aspect ratios were frequently referenced to maintain a readable and pleasant visual experience for Google Chat.
